Certitude

Certitude.  It is an unusual word and one that you do not hear used very often.  It is defined as the feeling of being certain.

Building off the post from the other day, certitude is one of things we desire.  When things become uncertain, many people become edgy and anxious.  Things become unclear and people are quick to fly off the handle.  People many times do not want change but they want more of the same.  You can see that with the election that looms over the country, there is a sense of uncertainty in the air which is seen in the financial markets.

The children of Israel  knew what it was like in Egypt and living in slavery.  They might not of liked it but it was familiar and they wanted to go back to it.  I can say I understand where they are coming from.  There are times in life that I just want to go back to familiar rather than push through to the new.  I do not go back because I understand that I miss out on so much of what God has in store for me when I return.  I do not want to be a dog that returns to his vomit but I want to find some fresh new meat to eat.

I have the desire for certitude but I love the adventure that comes when things are fresh and new.

What about you?  Do you ever desire to go back to the familiar rather than push through to the new?

Maybe

Maybe is a word that does not bring much comfort to people.  You do not have much comfort when you have something important happening and you invite soemone to come and they say “maybe”.  The word give leaves something to be desired.  The problem with maybe is that it not certain and we live in a world where we like certainty.  Maybe does not give us certainty but gives us uncertainty and this is difficult for us all.  Maybe does not mean something will or won’t happen, so it is not a negative word but neither is it a postive word, but a word of uncertainty.

In one of my favorite passages of Scripture the word maybe is used (oddly it is used in the New King James and in the Message) and in others it is the word perhaps which is just as uncertain of a word.  Let me share the passage with you, but first let me give you just a bit of background into this.

The Israelites were at war and they should have been attacking but Saul did not lead them to do this, instead he was hanging out under a Pomagranite tree not having the faith that God would bring them through.  Jonathan then on a whim decideds to go with his armour bearor and attack.  Read 1 Samuel 13 and 14 for the whole story.

Here is what I want you to see.  I Samuel 14:6 – Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come on now, let’s go across to these uncircumcised pagans. Maybe GOD will work for us. There’s no rule that says God can only deliver by using a big army. No one can stop GOD from saving when he sets his mind to it.”

Jonathan had no certainty, he just went to do it and his armor bearer agreed.  If you are like me, you want to have certainity but sometimes I think certainty keeps us from see what God can and will do.

Do you need certainty?  When was a time you stepped out without their being any certainty.

One Place

What is the one place in the world that you have not been that you would love to go?

I have been to many wonderful places around the world and have been blessed but the one place I want to go and spend time (because I have been there sitting in the airport) is London.  No real reason other than it has been a desire since I was very young.

Go ahead and tell me where you would like to go?

If you would please pass this question on so we can get a varied response.

What happens?

So many times I have so many things running through my mind that I want to write, but then I sit down at the computer and there it all goes.  I do not remember what it is that I want to share.  I think through it and think that no one will want to read this.  I do at times have a great flow about what I write and other times, not so much.  What happens?

Does anyone else struggle with these kinds of thoughts?  What do you do with them what this is what happens?

Please share.

Magic Bullet

Did you ever wish you had that magic bullet, you know, the one that when it hits you all the spiritual problems disappear.  The one that when it hits you all the stress in life is gone?

I had that magic bullet thought today as I went from my office over to Starbucks for a cup of coffee.  I was just wishing that everything would magically fall into place.  I then got my wits about me and thought that some of the best things that happened to me in life, happened in the process.  The magic bullet removes the process and God teaches me so much there.  I need to remember that I need to be in the process and learn from it.

Do you ever wish for the magic bullet?  What process are you learning from?

Inspirational

I am only 40 years old, but in football years this is way over the hill.  I just saw a report on Fox News where a 51 year old pastor who is a retired Navy man is playing college football for a team in Missouri – Westminster College, I think.  Regardless, this shows how age is not a factor for some people and I find great inspiration in seeing someone chase after their dreams.

What is holding you back from chasing your dreams?

Feeling it.

Spirituality to me is a bumpy and up and down ride, at least it is for me.  Right now I am in the midst of a slow up swing, not one of those rocket shots straight up but one of those ever so slow climbing upward movements.  I am beginning to feel it and see it in my life.  It has been a while of being kind of low so it is a great thing to feel.  I am not sure of what all has happened to bring it upward but I am pleased that it is.

How would you define spirituality and what direction is yours headed currently?

Greatest

What are the greatest things in these four areas for you?  They can be biggest blessing or biggest struggles.  I will share a little of each for me.

Family Life

Blessings- For me it seeing my kids grow and flourish.  Having great wife whom I love to laugh and be with.

Struggle – Keeping a balance with family and church.

Church Life -

Blessing - I am starting my 8th year here and the change where we are looking more like the community we live in is powerful.

Struggle- Knowing so much about people that others look at as perfect and seeing the devisation when their house of cards comes crashing down.

Spiritual Life -

Blessing- This is more tough to answer but I would have to say the greatest things having been mission trips for me because they have motivated me in ain me and in others through them.

Struggle – Being Consistent.

Friend Life -

Blessing – The realization that my wife is my best friend.

Struggle – My biggest struggle is here because I have found at times the pastorate to be a lonely place.  I do have the other pastors I work with who are my friends but most of the men whom I am close to outside the church live hours away.  I find it difficult for the men of the church to treat me normally.

Home today

I have two sick kids so I am home today.  I hate the feelings that come with having kids home sick.  Wanting them to get better and praying you do not get it.
