Answering the Call

Throughout my life I can remember many times when the telephone would ring and ring and ring.  Then like a scene from a movie, although there were plenty of people around to answer the phone, it would just keep ringing because everyone thought someone else was going to get it.  Eventually someone would yell out something like – “Is someone gonna get that?”   At that point then you would have people racing to the phone.  People trying to answer the call.  Sometimes when you answered the call you were glad you did and sometimes you were not too happy about answering it.

I remember specifically a call I answered when I was seventeen.  I was sitting in the the living room and I was studying my Bible in Philippians when the call came.  I was sure who the call was from but I was not too sure about answering it.  I argued about answering the call with myself.  Then I answered the call and before I accepted the call I actually argued with the one calling me.

You see the call that day was from God.  It was a call to full time Christian service.  I knew even at seventeen that the answering that call was a game changer for me.  I had plans for me but answering the call of God would blow those plans to pieces.  I am glad I answered that call 25 years ago but I for sure did not realize all that answering that call entailed. It has entailed great joy and great pain.  Even in the days that are painful I know that  I am blessed to be called by God.   Now I do not everyday love the call as much  as other days but I truly know that I am blessed to be called by God.

You too are called by God – maybe not to full time Christian service but God is calling you for a purpose to fulfill  for Him – are you doing what He has called you to do?

Philippians 3:14 – I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  1. Jim, this is 100% correct. We all may not be called to a vocational ministry, but we are called none the less.

It is also a game changer as you stated. It’s like God emptied out all my pockets and filled them back up with Him.

Thank you for sharing your heart.

  2. We are definitely all called by God. In my own life, I have been called to different places and actions at different times. My belief is that God’s calling on our life is not always a singular. I pray continuously that I will be ready and willing to answer His callings upon my life.

Here is to fulfilling the purpose which God sets before us.

  3. I always love to hear people tell their stories about answering the call.

I also think of all the people who that call falls on deaf ears.

It is our duty, as Christians, to sometimes ask the people around us, “Are you going to get that?”

    Great thoughts!
