This past Friday, I got a phone call early in the morning from the plumber saying that he could come and fix a leak that is under our house. I could not do it right when he called, so he told me that he would go do another job and call me on my cell and would be here by noon or as soon as he finished up the other job. My wife went to a conference with a group of ladies from our church on Friday morning and I was expecting to get a text or two from her as they travelled along because she likes to keep me informed. My son was to have a playoff baseball game Friday afternoon but the weather was looking bad for then and the coach texts us and lets us know what is going on , so I was expecting some communication from him. So I I was waiting for a number of calls and text on Friday throughout the day.
Now I had a number of plans for Friday. They included visiting several people, running some errands and I wanted to get the lawn mowed before it rained. I thought I should wait at the house until I heard back from the plumber and once he fixed the leak I would do everything I needed to do. I waited for him to call my cell phone but I did not get any call from him. I kept looking at my phone and there were no calls throughout the morning and I was getting a little frustrated because I really wanted to get my things done.
When I did not hear from the plumber in the morning, I thought the plumber must of have some difficulty at the job he was doing and was going to come after lunch. Meanwhile, I did not get any text from my wife and was sure she was just having a good time and would text me a little later so I ate some lunch and continued to work from home on stuff wishing I was able to get out and do everything else I wanted to get done. After lunch and me sitting around all afternoon, the plumber never called. Then it started to rain and so there went mowing and my son’s baseball game in my mind was going to be canceled for sure but I had not got any text from the coach. I checked my phone – no calls or texts from anyone – frustrating.
My daughter gets home from school and asks about my son’s game and I said that it was not officially canceled yet so we should prepare to go in a little while and she argues because it is pouring down rain. My son gets home and asks about his game and I looked at the phone and nothing and told him he needed to get ready and he argued that is was pouring down rain. It was about at that time when the house phone rings and it is my wife and she asks me if everything is alright. I asked her why she asked and she said she had texted me several times throughout the day and I did not respond. I looked at my phone and it looked normal and there were no texts that had come all day.
It hit me – my phone froze up and was not receiving anything. I turned my cell phone off and turned it back on. I had a voice mail from 10:30AM from the plumber asking if could come. I had two texts from my wife. I had four text from the baseball coach telling the game was canceled and giving the rescheduling information. Here is the thing – the phone looked fine. It was even acting fine as I would check it for phone calls and texts but it was not receiving anything.
Later in the evening I was sitting and thinking about all this and I was reminded about how many people in churches and in our lives look so good and they look like they are getting it. They look like they have got it all but the truth is they are missing out because spiritually they are receiving nothing. They look good and right but nothing is coming through.
I am reminded of this: 1 Corinthians 2:14 - But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
Let us make sure we are checking to make sure people are receiving what they need to be. Let us be praying that people are connected to the Spirit so that they can receive the truth of God.
Any thoughts?
