Back In The Saddle

Well I am back in the saddle after Hurricane Irene came through.

Here is a little rundown of what transpired here.

On Saturday morning at 2:00 AM I went to bed after watching weather report after weather report on Hurricane Irene and when I could not stay awake any longer I went to bed.  At 5:15 AM I was awaked by pounding rain and heavy winds.  I thought that it was not till later on Saturday that it was to get bad but when I heard the wind and rain I decided to get up and fill the bathtubs up with water.  I did that and went back to sleep but by 6:30 AM my son was awakened by the wind and rain and so then I was up.  At 7:30 AM we lost the cable and at 10:00 AM we lost power.  It rained for close to 21 hours and the wind blew that whole time with some pretty hard gusts.  At 11 PM we were in bed and heard trees falling outside.  After a while I was so tired that I just fell asleep.

Sunday morning we got up to a sunny morning but water everywhere and tree braches and limbs down all over.  I lost a small tree in my yard which was nothing.  Three large trees fell right behind the our house which is outside our bedroom and  they fell across the neighbors driveway.  Another neighbor had a tree fall in their above ground pool and ruined it.  My family decided we would go our and drive around to some church members to see if they were alright.  We found most to be fine but did find a family who had a tree fall into their home and it did do damage to the home but on the positive side they were all fine.  We also found another family who had 6 trees down but none hit any buildings.  We saw plenty of damage to many homes and many trees down but that is not all we saw as we went through the next few days.

Here are some of the other things I saw in the last few days.  I saw church families calling and checking in on each other and showing real love for one another.  I saw church family helping out other church family by clean up yards and others taking care of downed  trees.  I saw church family helping out others who did not go to this church but who were neighbors and friends.  I saw people helping out all over.  I have seen people stopping in and making sure their neighbors, friends, and family were fine.  It all speaks to love of each other and more to the love of Christ shining though.

John 13:34 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

Have you seen the people of God loving one another recently – if so how?

What is the longest you have been without power or current as they call it here?

P.S. – A dear friend from my previous church passed away so I could be slow in responding on Wed – Thur as I am headed to perform the Memorial Service.

Promises, Promises

Joshua 1:5,6 -  5 “No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. 6 “Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

Do you see the powerful promises of God here? Look at this closely – Joshua is reminded of some very precious promises in these verses. Here are the five things in these two verses that God promised him:

V. 5 The promise of victory over every enemy. – No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life

V. 5 The promise of the presence and power of God. – Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you

V. 5 The promise of the faithfulness of God. – I will not fail you or forsake you.

V. 6 The promise of absolute victory. – for you shall give this people possession of the land

V. 6 The promise of God to keep His promises. – which I swore to their fathers to give them.

What did Joshua have to do to make these things happen? Just one thing: Trust God! God was going to give Israel the victory. Joshua was merely the instrument that God had chosen to use to do it. These things were going to happen! For Joshua to be a part of it, all he had to do was have faith in God!

Let me also share with you that these same promises go for you and I but what we need to do is to Trust God – that is what the courageous Christian does.

Look here at the same  promises for us:

He still gives victory over all our enemies – 1 John 5:4-5 – For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

He is still ever-present and all powerful – Heb. 13:5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU, as well as Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

He is still faithful – Matt. 28:20 – teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

He still gives absolute victory – 1 Cor. 15:57- but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

He still keeps His promises – Rom. 4:21. – and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform

I love these promises!

What is a promise of God that sticks out in your mind?
